In a small Japanese town where the robot industry once flourished, three sisters gather for a dinner to commemorate the anniversary of their father’s death. In the Fukazawa household, humans and robots have lived together in harmony for years. In the kitchen, Muraoka, the household robot, is busy at work, he returned a bit late from grocery shopping because he stopped to chat with another robot along the way.

At the dinner table, conversations flow smoothly on the surface, but beneath it simmer old tensions, unresolved losses, and long-hidden secrets. While the family members cling to their own narratives, it might just be the robots that speak most honestly. Programmed to tell the truth, they confront a world where humans mostly seem to lie to themselves.

With this android variation on The Three Sisters, Japanese author and director Oriza Hirata transplants Chekhov’s classic into the near future. Drawing from a recognizable family dynamic, he raises fundamental questions about artificial intelligence, transhumanism, and our shifting relationship with technology. What does it still mean to be human today? And how do we differ from the intelligences we create ourselves?

Director Jasmina Douieb entrusts the roles of the androids to actors, deliberately playing with our perception. She blurs the lines between human and machine, between the living and the artificial, between reality and construct. The result is a subtle and layered production that looks not only at the future, but also at the mechanisms, power dynamics, and illusions that shape us today. Behind what is said and shown, another reality unfolds.
