In ‘Medea’s Children’, director Milo Rau tells a theatrical history in miniature. We witness the narration through the eyes of the children on stage who speak out about the absurd and blood-soaked tragedies of adult life in a setting that sort of pretends to be real. A real criminal court case is the starting point: the case of a mother who, in utter despair after a divorce, decides to kill her children and take her own life – but she survives. This modern tragedy is intertwined with the classic tragedy Medea, the most notorious example of relationship conflict and infanticide in Western literature.

ADJUSTING HOPE
The performance delves into the intricate relationship between writer Susan Sontag and her son David, interwoven with broader societal themes. On a stark stage, illuminated by cold light, stands a structure that appears to symbolize emptiness rather than belonging. Here, the shortcomings of a mother and her son in finding solace in each other become evident. Adjusting Hope presents a monologue featuring actor Dirk Roofthooft, under the direction of Thomas Janssens, who also wrote the script, accompanied by live music from jazz trombonist Nabou Claerhout.

Sara Vertongen & Het nieuwstedelijk’s open-air performance BLIK was conceived as a city walk through Leuven city centre.
The occasion was the New Horizons – Dieric Bouts Festival Leuven. Just as Dirk Bouts explored the possibilities of realism and depicting the real world to make the spectator empathise with the message of the image, Het Nieuwstedelijk wanted to make the participants of the city walk question their own gaze by letting them literally experience someone else’s perspective. The way someone perceives a situation, experiences a space and dares to move or show themselves is coloured by previous experiences. Everyone is trapped in their own truth but once you have seen something different, it cannot be ‘unseen’.

Antwerp, 1940 – 1945
The permanent exhibition ‘City at War. Antwerp, 1940-1945’ shows the impact of World War II on Antwerp and its inhabitants. The city was particularly hard hit: at least 25,000 people died as a result of Nazi terror, persecution of Jews and military violence. The exhibition brings to life the society of the time with symbolic places such as a cinema, a school, a house, the cathedral and the city hall. There, personal stories and objects of Antwerp citizens make the war and dictatorship tangible. They are stories of division, powerlessness, betrayal, violence, but also of courage, resistance and help. Captivating personal stories make this important part of history tangible. They are stories never to be forgotten.

LOSERS GET LOST
Losers get Lost is een lofzang op het falen,
want lang niet iedereen die verloren loopt, is een verliezer.
Een muzikale en verbale jamsessie tussen roes en rouw,
als tegengif voor onze obsessieve drang naar succes en ons blinde geloof in de maakbaarheid van onszelf.
Grijp je kans! Pak de flosh! Yes we can!
Vandaag ben je topdokter, morgen masterchef.
Maar wat als succes niet binnen handbereik ligt?
Geïnspireerd door de blues en Griekse mythes bezingen de makers de strevende en strompelde mens. Filosoof Alain de Botton verwoordt het zo: “It would be insane to call Oedipus a loser. He is not a loser, although he has lost.”

LUISTER
Hebzuchtige reuzen, woelige liefdesavonturen, demonen en helden… Als je denkt dat je dat niet in een museum kan vinden, dan ben je mis. In het jaar van zijn 10e verjaardag pakt het MAS uit met spannende en ontroerende verhalen uit Antwerpen. Samen met schrijver en theatermaker Dimitri Leue voert het museum de collectiestukken op in een meeslepend luisterspel.
In 2021 viert het museum zijn collectie met een kleurrijke, aparte expo. Je duikt in mythes, legendes en verhalen met een auditieve belevenis die je anders doet kijken naar de collectie. Iconische personages zoals Brabo, Hodja, Lange Wapper, de zwanenridder of Chamunda spelen de hoofdrol in ontroerende en ook grappige teksten van Dimitri Leue. De vertellingen nemen je mee langs een fantasierijk en theatraal decor.
In deze expo kies je zelf hoe je loopt en welke verhalen je beluistert. Je neemt een audiogids bij de hand, spitst de oren en sluit je even af van de buitenwereld. Verdwaal in de MAS-collectie en laat je fantasie de vrije loop. Kameleonie, ons hoofdpersonage, kan niet wachten om jou haar verhalen te vertellen.

David Foster Wallace’s taal in Short Interviews with Hideous Men opent het veld voor live sex en mindfuck, waarbij hij een harde kernvraag aansnijdt: hoe ver kunnen nare mannen, kan giftige mannelijkheid gaan? Dehumanisering, als de grootste tragedie van de mensheid, lokaliseert Wallace in de privésfeer, waar niemand het ziet. De pijnlijke ervaringen gaan diep. Gecementeerd door schaamte, is er geen taal die hen kan overwinnen. De productie van Yana Ross durft catharsis uit te dagen met groteske middelen.

KINGDOM vertelt het verhaal van twee families die zich uit de moderne wereld hebben verwijderd om in vrede met de natuur te leven. Maar na een paar jaar in een omgeving die even vijandig als mooi is, groeit het wantrouwen en de wrok. Plotseling wordt de verdeling van het grondgebied als oneerlijk beschouwd en lijkt het lot op een van de twee families te vallen. De gewoonten van de ene familie en de praktijken van de andere bedreigen het toch al wankele evenwicht van deze nieuwe samenleving…
Dan, op een dag, wordt er een barrière opgeworpen tussen de twee families. De oorlog is verklaard.Een paar meter van het slagveld zijn de kinderen getuige van het verdwijnen van deze wereld.Onder het oog van een regisseur, wordt de tragedie verteld…

DIE ANDEREN
A small, isolated village somewhere in the middle of Europe on a rainy and gloomy autumn evening. It’s been raining frequently; in fact, unceasingly, for months. Alda Ackermann, who manages the ‘Old Continent’ hotel with her husband René, runs over a boy on her way back from a meeting with the village headman – and to top it all, she’s steaming drunk thanks to all the booze served at the meeting. The boy is on the run and just wants to get out of there as quickly as possible. But he is injured and cannot be taken to hospital without Alda being busted. So he is treated in the village and hidden in the hotel. Soon the other villagers grow curious and suspicious; resentments, erotic longings, demands and revenge fantasies are all directed at the stranger who becomes embroiled in a variety of conflicting interests and asks himself many questions about the village: Why are there no children living there? By which rules do the few inhabitants co-exist? Why are they all so strangely wary? He begins to suspect that there is a dark secret.
