ORESTES IN MOSUL
An apparently endless chain of murders and blood feuds: this is the plot of the Oresteia. Agamemnon sacrifices his daughter Iphigeneia, his wife Clytaemnestra murders him but is in turn murdered by their own son. Aeschylus’ tragedy is considered the foundation myth of Western civilization, in which the principles of blood feuds and ‘an eye for an eye’ were replaced with jurisprudence, integration and reconciliation.
In Orestes in Mosul, Milo Rau combines the tragedy of tragedies with contemporary political conflicts. With an international ensemble of Iraqi and European actors he presents an Oresteia for our time. The central question is: how will the chain of violence between the parties in the Syrian-Iraqi civil war and their international allies ever come to an end? Milo Rau imbues the tragedy with its ancient grandeur, but simultaneously connects it with topical questions. What might the Oresteia – rehearsed and performed in Western Europe and Mosul – mean today?

In 2019, it will be 450 years since the death of Pieter Bruegel the Elder. To mark this anniversary, THE WORLD OF BRUEGEL will be shown in the Bokrijk Open-Air Museum. The Bruegelgame is part of this interactive exhibition that exposes the link between the renowned Flemish painter Pieter Bruegel the Elder and Bokrijk. The inspiring Bruegel Trail allowes the visitor to immerse himself in one of his paintings and discover, in a pleasantly surprising way, how relevant his work remains today.
The jester from the painting ‘The Fight between Carnival and Lent’ leads you on a digital tow rope. Bruegel meets Pokémon Go and Snapchat in Bokrijk! An “augmented reality” hat takes the visitor into a realistic model depicting a true example of the 16th century. An exciting search starts for missing objects from the painting.
Pieter Bruegel the Elder designed his paintings as visual puzzles for people to look at together. Viewers can discover all kinds of stories and meanings in them. As conversation pieces, they also lead to discussions. And through his compositions, Bruegel comments on current events, as well as holds up a mirror to his viewers. The visitors are invited to play the game using one of his paintings, The Battle between Carnival and Lent.

ARCTIQUE
2025, somewhere between Denmark and Greenland. Six strangers are lured by an anonymous letter into stowing away on a former luxury cruise ship bound for Greenland. On the way there, the boat towing the cruise ship abandons in on the high seas. Our strangers will drift away in international waters until they find themselves trapped in the ice…
ARCTIC is a political thriller featuring six characters trapped in a scheme devised to make them disappear. In her new production, Anne-Cecile Vandalem once more uses the language of cinema in the service of a theatrical and musical fable of the future.

ALS DE KLOK VAN A
In Als de klok van A a mother and daughter are waiting for a lost brother and son. Today the daughter decides to find out why the boy never came home. Encouraged by the storm that rages outside and by daydreaming she has about men on camels trotting through the desert, she sharpens things up. Then the water breaks through the dikes and a few villagers float past …
When the clock becomes A is a theater performance in which music plays a crucial role. As a recognizable element from the world of fishing and as a carrier of great emotions: hope, joy, loss and mourning. Ilse and Amaryllis Uitterlinden play the two main roles as mother and daughter.
Première op 16 maart 2017 Stadsschouwburg Middelburg.
