TRISTESSES
2016. Far right parties are on the rise throughout Europe. In the countries of Northern Europe, National Awakening- an antidemocratic, populist movement led by Martha Heiger. In Martha’s birthplace, a suicide has taken place. Leader’s visit to the peninsula for her funeral is announced. Ellen, a young teenager, sets out to assassinate the woman threatening her and her country’s future. But on the day of the funeral, the situation drastically changes…
“En découdre avec ce qui nous désespère quotidiennement, dans ce monde-ci.”
TRISTESSES is a theatrical performance whose main theme is the relation between power and sadness. Borrowing the conventions of detective fiction and political comedy, Anne-Cécile Vandalem explores with humor one of the most formidable political weapons of the day: making the masses sad. Through cinematographic stage design, she shines a spotlight on the power of the media and the ways censorship functions in the open or, insidiously, in the shadow.
Première on 10 April 2016 Théatre de Liège, Liège
On tour from May 2016

LILIOM
At the age of 27, Liliom decides to change course and to start living together with Julie, a young woman. With this he says goodbye to his fleeting, yet familiar artist life and ends up in a raw reality. The loved ones live in poverty and depend on gifts from distant relatives and friends. Liliom sees his life changing into a difficult struggle and soon he starts to demonize the world around him.
Magistrate to Liliom: “Why are you ashamed that you were loved?”
We dive into the grim imagination of a stubborn and violent man who apparently does not have the talent to live a good and happy life. A story about the ups and downs of an individual in a closed community where everyone is constantly on each other’s lips and privacy is unthinkable, where nothing is left untouched and moral condemnation is always lurking. A world in which there is no quiet empty space.

LE GRAND CIRQUE
At the request of the KVS, the French-Algerian writer Mohamed Kacimi examined this painful episode in recent Belgian history. Kacimi plowed through the entire archive. No person who can believe it. We follow the debates of gendarmes and police, of instruction and justice in the search for one Marc D. Le grand Cirque shows how incompetence, self-delusion, underhanded competition and good intentions merge into a deadly cocktail.
A person would be devastated by less. A country too.

GAZ
Pleidooi van een gedoemde moeder
After a horrible attack in the heart of Europe, the mother of the killed terrorist takes the floor. Hundreds of civilians, especially children, died horribly. Without condoning her son or sparing herself, she measures the time in which she lives. In this way she transforms herself, with painful and sometimes resentful pleasure, into a mirror of an entire society.
‘Had my son committed his actions in wartime and in the uniform of our army? He had received a monument.’
Viviane De Muynck gives shape to the mother of a killed terrorist. In addition to a psychological portrait that tries to fathom the motives of the victim, GAZ is. A doomed mother’s plea mainly an argument for humanity and a plea for nuance: a person or his actions cannot be traced to a few motives.

STILL TOO SAD TO TELL YOU
STILL TOO SAD TO TELL YOU is directly inspired by I AM TOO SAD TO TELL YOU, a video self-portrait by artist Bas Jan Ader. Anne-Cécile Vandalem pays homage to this almost five decades old motif and transforms this in a immersive installation made up of several portraits—women, men and children, some actors, some not, famous or unknown. Ten screens invite you to an intimate experience where tears, as they are put on display, also beg to be collected. Faces may become stages and landscapes depending on whether your vision blurs, a tear forms, you break into tears or sob, you cry a river or a torrent, you wipe or share your tears, in silence, in gasps, in deep sighs, loud, short or long cries interspersed with words, whole or truncated, whether you suffocate or drown…
so many faces offered and tears shed.
STILL TOO SAD TO TELL YOU is the counterpoint to TRISTESSES, Das Fräulein Kompanie’s subsequent production. This small-scale installation locates the topic on a strictly individual level and unveils the aesthetic power of solitary lachrymal manifestations.
Installation displayed on XS festival 26, 27 & 28 March 2015 at Théâtre National, Brussels.

SNEEUW
Speckled white.
Sleepy.
A first snowflake on your cheek.
Everything is white.
Everything becomes white.
Everything is different.
Everything will be different.
What was black turns white.
What was loud becomes silent.
What was dry becomes wet.
What was not appears.
Snow is a visual and musical children’s show in and about the snow. Snow takes you to the silence of the white, to the white of the cold, to the cold of a hand, to the hand of a girl. A girl who can conjure snowflakes, whirls through a white world and sings the silence with her crystal clear voice.

SLUMBERLAND
The Moongirl who lands on earth, the Sandman who leaves his sand cave, the Sleep professional who makes sleep into a science, the Bat-boy who prefers to sleep upside-down. Each one is a magical, moving and comical figure balancing on the rope stretched loosely between what is real and what isn’t, and each lives on enduringly in your memory.
“When An Pierlé sings, you float between dream and reality” (Knack Focus *****)
Slumberland is a breathtaking film-like musical journey into the world of the night. The point at which everything is overturned and the dream outstrips reality. It is the children themselves who with their astonishing imagination take you to a fascinating world. They tell us about how they sleep, what happens in their dreams and why day turns to night. The songs, performed live by An Pierlé and Fulco Ottervanger, and the film images by Nathalie Teirlinck portray in sounds and pictures a series of wondrous figures who meet each other in a nocturnal world.
Première on 31/01/2015 at Kunstencentrum Vooruit, Ghent
On tour from 2015
Slumberland won the Music Theatre Now and was selected for the Theaterfestival 2015.
